WHERE DEMOCRACY WAS BORN

Townships like SOWETO and KHAYELITSHA are being credited of having given birth to Democratic South-Africa. But democracy was born in every street of every township. It's here on these streets where resistance began.Today Mdantsane is a vibrating energetic place of rich cultural diversity. Mdantsane's street culture is an example of creativity, fantasy, inspiration and improvisation although still facing great poverty and adversity.

In the 1970's we have seen similar pictures like this beautiful portrait of children on their way home from school. At the time the children on these old photographs were on the streets and fighting for the cause of their parents, the liberation of South-Africa and there were no smiles on their faces. Walking or driving through Mdantsane nowadays happier scenes can be seen.

Mdantsane is divided into so -called units. NU stands for Native Unit and is an expression that still originates from Apartheid times. There is a process on it's way to change that terminology and to rename the units to zones.
